Course Work in Leadership and Social Change Minor!

Morality and Justice- Morality and Justice is a course I took freshman year that discussed different moral and non moral principles. This is what time Virginia Tech Timetable of courses description is, a critical survey of theories concerning human nature, the meaningful life, and the moral evaluation of actions, persons, and institutions. Theories will be applied to such issues as abortion, justice, and moral problems faced by professionals. We did readings of Kant, and Plato and my artifact from this class is my final paper is a contrasting paper on Kant’s, Metaphysics and Morals and Plato’s Symposium.

Women's and Gender Studies- Women and Gender Studies was a class that I took my sophomore year and it was a discussion of how gender, sex, culture, and race affects the way that people perceive a person. This what the Virginia Tech Timetable of classes said about the class, this interdisciplinary introduction to Women's and Gender Studies examines interrelations between men and women as social groups in the contexts of race, class and other systems of inequality. It places special focus on the diverse experiences of women and feminist struggles for social change. My artifact is my final reflection for the class. In this paper I discuss what I have learned and noticed when I take time to stop and think how peoples actions and perceptions change based on a persons gender.

Global Ethics- Global Ethics is a class I took as a junior. It was an examination of different conflicts affecting our global world such as climate and how to perceive these challenges and what others do to effect the changes. Ethical issues in international context. The Virginia Tech Timetable of classes description is, an application of the principles of moral theory to such issues as the obligations of richer nations toward poorer ones, cultural and other forms of relativism, emigration and immigration, nationalism, war, deterrence, intervention, environmental degradation, preservation of natural diversity, and responsibilities toward future generations. My artifact is my final paper for my Global Ethics class. This paper is about a reading we had to read for class titled The Constitutionalization of International Law and the Legitimation Problems of a Constitution for World Society.

Field Study- For my field study I traveled to Adigrat, Ethiopia with the study abroad program Creating Sustainable Social Change. I was in Adigrat for four weeks and we taught third grade for the first two weeks and forth grade students the second two weeks. We created lesson plans and worksheets for the students and taught the students every day. We taught the children English, handwriting, computer skills, math, and some science. We also brought tables with us to Africa and we taught the students with different applications and also taught the teachers how to use these new technologies. It was such a joy to teach these students and even the teachers some of our knowledge. But in teaching these children I learned so much more from them then they ever learned from us. I learned to take nothing for granted and to respect everything and everyone one in my presence. To accept help when needed and to try to always be the best person I can be.

Study Abroad- During my semester long study abroad I learned a lot about myself as a person and as a leader. We spent nine weeks in Lugano, Switzerland and five weeks in Ethiopia and Rwanda. During our weeks in Lugano we were in groups and we created a Grant proposal to assist the place we were going to visit in Africa. Our grant proposal was planned towards the Bruh Tesfa Youth Development Center, which was a youth development center in Adigrat that had an orphanage and various clubs and activities that the youth could participate in. Our grant proposal was to build on their existing program called the Green Club, which is agriculture based club; because agriculture is the main source of income in Ethiopia. We wanted to revamp the club to make it all girls, because girls are often looked at as second-class citizens in Ethiopia. Also to add three facets of the club, a learning/ agriculture skills portion, a business portion, and a women empowerment portion. These young girls would learn to grow crops at the club and then learn the skills to sell these crops at a market. This project really helped me in my leadership journey. Because we were in groups and things were due periodically so people had to take charge and be a leader in the group. I tried to take charge and make my opinions heard and voice my thoughts, I didn’t just take the back seat. I tried to take the time to gather my group members and get all our work done on time and efficiently.

Leadership Studies 1015- I am taking this class right now in conjunction with this senior seminar. We haven’t really done that many assignments so far this semester. We have just broken the surface of learning about leadership and what leadership means to us. We have just recently discussed the challenges related to leadership and if we agree or disagree with the challenge. This is what the Virginia Tech Timetable of classes description of the course, it explores traditional and contemporary leadership theory and competencies by comparing cultural contexts of leadership.
