Citizenship- Community Social Change Value

What: Citizenship is the process whereby the individual and the collaborative group become responsibly connected to the community and the society through the leadership development activity. This is a community value because you are a citizen of a whole community and have to be responsible to a whole community. When I was born in the United States I become a citizen of this country. I have a responsibility to uphold the standards of the USA. I am a member of a nation and am connected thru my citizenship to all the other citizens of the United States. When coming to Virginia Tech I am also a citizen of the Hokie community. At Virginia Tech we have certain values and principles we uphold. We also have pride for our community and do our best for the community as a whole.

So What: You have to be an active citizen in your community. If you do not do your best to be an engaging and active member of the community then you are not being the best citizen you can be. Citizenship is being part of a common greater good. You have to strive to do your part. An example when you are a citizen of the United States is voting. It is your duty as a citizen to vote for your public figures. It is important in the United States that you carry out this civic duty. Some people think I’m just one vote it won’t matter but it does matter and it’s wonderful that we live in a democracy and can vote.

Now What: After graduation my dream is to move to New York City. If I move there I will then be a citizen of that community. I will do my all to be an active and engaging member of the community. I should volunteer in my community and be an active voice if something should be changed. Your citizenship can change if you move from community to community so it is important to maintain the responsibility and connectedness to the other members of your community.
