Controversy with Civility- Group Social Change Value

What: Controversy with Civility recognizes two fundamental realities of any creative group effort: those differences in viewpoint are inevitable, and that such difference must be aired openly but with civility. Civility implies respect for others, a willingness to hear each other’s views, and the exercise of restraint in criticizing the views and actions of others. People have to listen to other people’s opinions and views in order to collaborate and work towards a common purpose. In very aspect of your life you need to exercise you civility, if you don’t respect others and don’t listen to each other’s views then you will never get anywhere in life. In my job as an Orientation Assistant I needed to listen to the freshman and their parents and answer any questions they had. Also to listen to my bosses and help with whatever they needed. I had to respect all the parents listen to all their questions even if I answered that question a million times I still had to be kind and respectful like it was the first time I answered it.

So What: Civility is a very important Social Change Value. You must respect everyone and treat everyone with respect. If you are a leader and you don’t have respect and civility for your followers then no one will ever listen to you as a leader. If you criticize others and don’t respect them no one will respect you in return. Your followers deserve the same respect and civility that they give you as a leader. Also if you criticize or disrespect your clients then you would be out of a job, no one would hire some one that is disrespectful to their clients. It is so very important to put others before yourself and really watch what you say and be respectful to everyone you come into contact with.

Now What: I am currently interviewing for positions and it is so important that you respect everyone you talk to. If I was to interview for a job and I was disrespectful to the employer then I would definitely not get the job. It is also important in group setting, when someone if your group says something you don’t agree with you have to exercise civility in not criticizing what other people have to say. You can’t dismiss people and disrespect their ideas or values you have to take the time to listen to everyone and hear what they have to say.
